Western Australia has announced changes to the 2022-23 Skilled Migration Scheme for Subclasses 190 and 491.

The government has added 194 new occupations to the list of graduate occupations, bringing the total to 331 occupations.

As part of the McGowan government’s $195 million Reconnect Western Australia strategy, the expanded roster aims to attract a wide range of skills aligned with the state’s current and future workforce needs. work.

Referring to the benefits of these changes, International Education Minister David Templeman said: “Providing a skilled migration pathway is key to attracting international students to Western Australia to retain their ability once they have completed their studies.

These appointments will be available to applicants who have a designated occupation identified on the Western Australia Skilled Migration Occupations List (WASMOL) or Graduate Occupations List (GOL) using the visa subclasses: Skilled Named Visa – subclass 190 or regional skilled labor (provisional visa) – subclass 491.

First preference will be given to those residing in WA, followed by those living in other parts of Australia, then international applicants.

SBS Punjabi spoke with Perth-based Migration Officer Narinder Kaur Sandhu about the new announcement.

She says that previously state appointment was not a popular option in Western Australia, but within a year many professions have been added, making it one of the most comprehensive lists in the country .

“There are now 331 professions listed in the list of graduate professions, including newly added professions, such as hairdresser, bricklayer, financial brokers, IT professionals, auto mechanic, carpenter, cook, dancers, many health professions and much more.

“If an international student graduates from Western Australia, this program will provide a fast track to permanent residency,” Ms Sandhu said.

Eligibility may be determined by requirement criteria.

“Applications for WA State nomination will be made on a ranking system, with preference given to those residing in WA, followed by those living in other parts of Australia, then international applicants,” she explained.

New professions have been added to the General and Graduate pane. The expanded list was presented in a combined list of professions of List of Skilled Migration and Graduate Occupations (GOL) of WA.

Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery said the need for a skilled workforce is a priority to support the state’s economic growth.

“The state government is committed to encouraging the return of international students to WA to support our international education sector and address skills shortages in key industries,” she said.
